Recently, Digital Spy held an online poll asking people to weigh in on who they think is the GREATEST TV CHARACTER IN THE 21st CENTURY. That is quite a role to hold and undoubtedly there were many great characters voted for. When I read this Top 10 list for the first time, I was delighted to see so many of my favorites on the list and also became conflicted because how the hell do you whittle a list of amazing characters in this century down to TEN?! Without further ado, here are the most beloved (allegedly) of the 21st century:
- Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory) – 5.9k
- Daryl Dixon (The Walking Dead) – 6.1k
- Gregory House (House) – 7.2k
- Mal Reynolds (Firefly) – 7.3k
- Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) – 8.5k
- Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones) – 8.8k
- Hannibal Lecter (Hannibal) – 9.3k
- Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock) – 13k
- Castiel (Supernatural) – 32k
- The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who) – 35k
WOW! A whopping 35,000 votes for David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor.
I must admit, I would personally switch out a few of these top ten (as would most people because we all get excited and inspired by different characters) but I am elated that Tennant got the number 1 spot. He was my first Doctor. My friend wanted very badly to get me into Doctor Who and she started me with The Waters of Mars.
My life was never the same. I became an addict after that episode and got very willingly pulled into the Whoniverse. There is nothing quite like David Tennant’s Doctor. He was suave, passionate, brilliant, hilarious, energetic, and just pitiful enough to endear him to you as someone who is vulnerable and sensitive. It’s no surprise to me that he snagged this, because Doctor Who truly embodies the concept of adventure, curiosity, tolerance and love. Our world seems to be falling apart sometimes with all the turmoil and Doctor Who artfully shows us how to handle our humanity with grace. And I can’t think of anyone other than David that could make me feel so courageous and determined to stand up for what’s right in this world. So congratulations, David Tennant. I really hope you understand the gift you’ve given. Obviously your fans appreciated it; a remarkable 35,000 of them!
